I quit. Therefore I am?

“Quitting launched my comedy career… After quitting comedy, I became the most talked about comedian on the planet.”

–Hannah Gadsby in her “Three Ideas” TED talk

While I have absolutely no audience or artistic “career” such as Hannah Gadsby, I decided to quit trying (and failing) to write regularly, and promptly gave up all hope of ever publishing any written works. But something strange occurred–the ideas for stories and characters and settings started flying into my head at unreasonable speed and intensity, and my years-long writer’s block vanished.

I can’t even begin to understand this paradox, nor do I recommend “quitting” to anyone as a method for “doing.” All I can say is that, traveling down the corridor of existence, I’ve always made a point to try all the doors–those that are wide open, locked, or slightly ajar. One such door I purposely closed unlocked a different one across the hall and now the itch has resurfaced. Let’s peer inside, and see what we can scratch it with, shall we?
